Elite Player Pathway (Excell Cell South East)

As part of the BJA initiative for identifying, nurturing and progressing talented young players in England and following the successful launch and operation of both the ExCell North West and ExCell Midlands, we are pleased to announce the launch of ExCell South East 1 on Wednesday 31st March 2010 at Redbridge Judo Club, lead coaches being Bill Taylor, Steve Sandy and Thomas Cousins.

The ExCell South East 1 will support players from the Northern Home Counties, London and Southern Areas and will run weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings, with a one hour technical session (7.00pm–8.00pm) for England Squad, ETD and invited players, followed by a 1 ½ hour Open Randori session (8.00pm-9.30pm).

Please pass on the information of the open randori to anyone you know who may be interested in attending - the more the better!

VO2 Max Testing

As part of my European Judo Unions Level 4 Sports Science Degree at Anglia Ruskin University, students have been tested for Lactic Acid Threshold and VO2 Max. Here we can see Adrian Markov being pushed to his limit to calculate his VO2 MAX. The young German judo player had an impressive Vo2 max of 71ml.kg. Coming in a close second was Billy Pittman 70.1ml.kg and Tash Collins a female -52kg player who had an impressive 66ml.kg. Research suggest male judoka vary from 50.4-69.9ml.kg and females average 48.9ml.kg (Winter, 2006).
